Application of Polyester Filament Yarn (regular)

In woven apparel shells converted on high-speed rapier and air-jet looms, regular polyester filament yarn of 83 dtex/36 f semi-dull round cross-section is assembled at warp densities of 95–120 ends per inch and weft densities of 70–90 picks per inch for plain and 2/1 twill constructions. The sizing bath applied on sectional warping lines contains 8.0% polyvinyl alcohol solids, 1.5% polyacrylate binder, and 0.2% non-ionic antistat on bath weight; target size pick-up is 70–80% for high-density warp. Where downstream fabric is a 65/35 polyester-cotton blend, the regular filament yarn functions as warp and cotton spun yarn as weft. After weaving at 600–700 rpm on rapier machines, greige is scoured, pre-heat-set at 190–195 °C for 35–40 s on an 8-chamber stenter, and dyed with disperse dyes at 130 °C in high-temperature jet equipment. Compliance is assessed under ISO 2076:2013 for generic fibre naming, ISO 13936-2:2014 for seam slippage at a fixed load of 120 N, ISO 12947-2:2016 for Martindale abrasion, and ISO 105-C06:2010 for domestic laundering colour fastness. Converted terminal products include corporate uniform jackets, trousers, women’s dresses, blouses, and school uniforms. Regular filament yarn at 3.8–4.4 cN/dtex tenacity is not considered adequate for load-bearing or tear-critical workwear shells, which require high-tenacity polyester grades.

Why Does Thread Lubrication and Twist Balance Govern Seam Integrity in High-Speed Apparel Assembly?

For multi-directional 301 lockstitch and 401 chainstitch seams in woven and knit apparel, 167 dtex/48 f regular polyester filament yarn is plied into a 2-ply sewing thread of 40 tex with 650 tpm S twist and 1.8–3.0% by weight ester-based lubricant. The thread is heat-set at 180–185 °C under controlled tension on two-for-one twisting machines before precision metered lubricant application and final winding on 1 kg cones. On 5500 rpm lockstitch equipment, the lubricant level is maintained below 3.0% to prevent needle gumming and above 1.8% to control needle heat. Compliance references include ISO 4915:1991 for stitch type classification, ASTM D6193-16 for stitch and seam specification, ASTM D204-02(2016) for sewing thread physical properties, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 class I for skin-contact finished garments. Terminal product types are construction seams in trousers, blouses, shirts, and automotive seat cover stitching. Regular filament thread is not recommended for heavy leather or load-bearing technical seams where bonded high-tenacity filament or core-spun constructions are required.

Blackout drapery substrates in the 220–320 g/m² mass range are constructed from 75 denier/72 filament semi-dull regular polyester filament yarn in both warp and weft. Greige fabric is woven at 190–210 total thread count per inch in taffeta or twill before high-temperature jet dyeing at 130 °C. For room-darkening performance, an acrylic foam coating is applied at 20–35 g/m² dry add-on; where fire resistance is specified for public space curtains, an intumescent phosphorus-based backcoating is applied at 15–30% of fabric weight and cured at 150–160 °C in a 6-chamber stenter. Compliance is evaluated under BS 5867-2:2008 for drapery flammability, NFPA 701 for light and medium drape propagation, and ISO 105-B02:2014 for xenon-arc light fastness with a blue wool rating of ≥ 4 at 40 hours. Dimensional stability following finishing is measured at ≤ 1.5% residual shrinkage after 5 wash cycles according to ISO 6330:2012. Terminal products include blackout drapery lining, roller blinds, and side panels for room-darkening shades. Regular polyester filament without the FR backcoating is not adequate for contract drapery because molten drip promotes vertical flame propagation.

When Low-Denier Bright Filament Is Selected for Woven Label Face Stocks

Woven label stock made from 50 denier/24 filament bright regular PET is tensioned at 110–120 ends per centimetre with 33–38 picks per centimetre on jacquard needle looms. The face stock is 100% polyester filament with no added fillers; solvent-based gravure ink for printed label fields is deposited at 1.5–2.5 g/m² dry film, and ultrasonic edge sealing requires no added chemical binder. Compliance is assessed under ISO 2076:2013 for PES generic identification, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 class I for baby garment labels, and REACH EC 1907/2006 Annex XVII for restricted azo dye amines. Thermal cutting on ultrasonic equipment operates at 20–30 kHz with edge sealing tolerance ≤ 0.5 mm. Terminal products are woven brand labels, care labels, content labels, and flag labels for apparel, footwear, and home goods. The bright regular filament is not suitable for high-abrasion luggage tag applications where a textured or spun polyester face provides better print adhesion and delamination resistance.

General-purpose furniture suspension webbing and luggage strap tapes are manufactured on heavy-duty needle looms with 300 denier/96 filament regular polyester woven at 40–60 mm widths using 35–45 warp ends and 18–25 picks per 25 mm. The web is 100% PES continuous filament; cut-end tipping uses 8–10% acrylic end-seal compound on cut-end mass to prevent fraying in later strap assembly. The process includes sectional beaming, needle-loom weaving at 200–300 rpm, hot-knife cutting at 300–350 °C, and end tipping. Compliance is assessed under ASTM D6775-13 for breaking strength and elongation of textile webbing and ISO 13934-1:2013 for strip tensile testing; because regular filament web breaking strength varies with pick density, converter-specific production minima are established through ASTM D6775-13 rather than a single industry-wide value. Terminal products include furniture suspension webbing, luggage straps, pet leads, and non-load-bearing tie-downs. This regular filament grade is not allocated to lifting slings, fall-protection harnesses, or automotive safety restraints, which require high-tenacity filament with documented batch traceability and process control.

Umbrella Canopy Weave Density, Hydrostatic Head, and Coating Cure

In umbrella canopy conversion, 75 denier/72 filament semi-dull regular polyester filament is woven into 190T or 210T pongee with 190–210 total thread count per inch. The woven base fabric is scoured, dyed at 130 °C with disperse dyes, dried, and coated with a one-component PU topcoat at 5–12 g/m² dry add-on; a fluorocarbon-free water-repellent finish is pad-applied at 2–4% owf before curing. Calendering at 120–140 °C and final curing at 150–160 °C for 60–90 s completes the canopy surface. Compliance is assessed under ISO 811:2018 for hydrostatic head, with PU-coated 190T–210T canopies generally tested at 800–1500 mm water column; ISO 105-B02:2014 for xenon-arc light fastness with grade ≥ 4; and EN ISO 2411:2017 for coating adhesion after wet exposure. Terminal products include folding umbrellas, golf umbrellas, and beach shade canopies. A major limitation is that unmodified regular polyester exhibits limited UV resistance; canopy converters specify UV-stabilized yarn or topical UV absorber at 0.3–0.5% owf when outdoor end-uses exceed 500–800 hours of direct sun exposure.

Automotive seat facing knitted on 4-bar tricot raschel machines from 167 dtex/48 f semi-dull regular PET is set at 18–22 wales per cm and 14–18 courses per cm. The dyed fabric is laminated to a 3–5 mm polyether foam layer with reactive hot-melt polyurethane at 4–8 g/m² coat weight and backcoated with an acrylic formulation at 20–30 g/m² dry add-on. The backcoating functions as the combustion barrier layer; FMVSS 302 limits horizontal burn rate to ≤ 102 mm/min for occupant compartment materials. Additional compliance includes ISO 105-C06:2010 for washing fastness and AATCC TM8-2016 for crock fastness of the dyed filament surface. Terminal products are seat centre panels, door panel inserts, and headrest covers. Without the FR and lamination boundary, unmodified regular polyester knitted fabric will exceed the FMVSS 302 burn-rate threshold because of melt drip and high wicking along filament bundles.
